Grippy tires and being a little low on oil does not mix well! What to do now?

The other night I took a freeway connector that goes in a tight circle very aggressively. As I straightened out I started hearing a loud knocking from the engine bay. I pretty much instantly knew what happened. Fingers crossed it could be something else, but the chances are so slim I am pretty much only thinking about the worst case scenario.

Anyone know a good mechanic in the Socal/Orange County Area? Any advice on how to source a used motor properly? I have done all of the work myself so far on this car. I would like to continue to learn and do an engine swap myself, but I just don’t have the space for a project that involved.

The worst part is I was planning on doing an oil change the next day...

I had a silver 2003 that I bought new. Had it till 2010. Fun to drive car. To me one of best profiles.

They should of offered it as a awd turbo as a GTX.

Sometimes I don’t mind when things break because it gives me an excuse to work on my car and upgrade things. This time, not so much! Thanks for the condolences!

Definitely a blast to drive. It’s everything I want/need in a car during this time in my life.

As awesome as AWD and turbo would be, I probably wouldn’t have been asked to afford it. Then I would feel bad about not having the top model, ha!

Thank you! The photo makes it look prettier than it is. The paint is all starting to go bad. Lots of things wrong, but I still love it! Time to find a spot for me to rebuild this thing...

I don’t have a ton of in depth knowledge about working internally on engines. How did you know that nothing else was damaged? Can’t the crank shaft get messed up?

Apparently on my motor you have to pull the transmission to get to the bottom of the rods. It’s not just a matter of removing the oil pan.

Definitely something I am looking into. Thanks!

Don’t be too intimidated by working on an engine! As long as you are logical and organized, it is a do-able task. Honestly the hardest part by far is setting cam timing, especially with VVT engines

I was able to inspect the crank. if it is scored and you can feel it with your fingernail, it needs to come out. Which means pulling the engine. If there is only a small blemish you can usually use a very fine hone to take care of it.

It sounds like your car is going to be a major pain to get to the rods. Maybe embrace the opportunity to put a new clutch in! Look at the bright sides.

I have been wanting to replace the clutch for a little while now... thanks for the advice. I just don’t have the space where I can take my time and not make costly mistakes while tearing apart the motor. I am much more confident in being able to swap the engine in a day or two.

I really wish I could inspect the crankshaft and bearings by just taking off the oil pan. That would save me a ton of money in diagnosing.

I really want to use it as a LeMons car one day. This definitely detracts from the value of the car, which makes it more suitable for that!
